A synthetically-recreated photographic time-series, January 1996.

In this animation, we present a sequence of twenty-four re-renderings of photographs of the Rouen Cathedral, ordered from early morning to sunset. All of the images in this sequence are renderings, from a new point of view, of cathedral photographs that have been projected onto and aligned with a 3D model of the cathedral itself. The colorful diagonal and vertical stripes flickering in the animation's lower half are people: because they are not represented in the 3D model, the passers-by have become plastered across the ground plane in the process of re-rendering.

The sun rises behind and to the right of the cathedral, and then traces a path over the front and right of the cathedral, raking light across its surface. For a brief moment in the morning the sun's light can be seen filtering through the lower stained glass windows of the cathedral's right hand tower.

A user of the Rouen Revisited kiosk would experience a sequence similar to this if she positioned her view near the front of the façade, set the kiosk to display new photographs (versus archival photographs or Monet's paintings of the cathedral), and then scrubbed through the "time of day" interface. In the interactive kiosk, a similar time series is available for every point of view in 3-space from which the cathedral's façade can be viewed.
