I created an insect like creature inspired by Valentino Braitenberg's "Vehicles." The critter has two capacitive sensing antennae (not shown in photo) an an infrared motion detector. With these sensors and dc gearmotors for mobility, the bug can follow people and other warm objects and display a smiley face on its nylon "hotpants" display (also not yet installed at the time this photo was taken) when its antennae are triggered by close proximity to a person or other relatively large conductive object. The purpose of the bug is to display emotion that people might associate with a living thing, thereby making the machine seem alive. | |
