reactive clothing :: clothing that responds to stimuli - thus creating sound, emitting light, or causing changes in color, temperature, and/or physical geometry. the behavior depends on what materials are used in the construction of the garment, either structurally, as an embedded element, or as decoration.
iris is my first example sketch of reactive clothing. i built the handbag during the spring of 2002, using the nylon language and hardware system. when the handbag swings past the legs of it's moving owner, the circle designs on either side flash on and off in a jagged alternating rythm. the bag makes quick clicking noises in sync with the flashes of light. the result is a sense of electricity and spark that resonates with the movement of the owner. it is the playful interaction between the bag and its owner's body that controls the bag's behavior.
