Charles Barbier, refined by Louis Braille: The Braille Alphabet (1821)
The Ecriture Nocturne was a writing system of raised dots developed by Charles Barbier for the French military as a way of communicating after dark. At age 15, Louis Braille was introduced to this system, simplified it to a pattern of 6 dots, and further refined it.
